Animal/God | A Journey into Trance
Movement Workshop with Tony Yap
Tony Yap is an accomplished dancer and multidisciplinary artist who explores and creates an individual dance-theatre language informed by psychophysical research, Asian shamanistic trance dance, butoh and ‘psycho-vocal’ experimentations.
Yap has been a distinct figure in inter-cultural discourse in Australia. He received Asialink residential grants in 2005 and 2008, as well as a Dance Fellowship from the Australia Council for the Arts, and is the founding Creative Director of Melaka Arts and Performance Festival – MAP Fest. Yap brings a non-Western perspective to the development of contemporary dance and performance practice that is grounded in Asian philosophies, sensibilities and forms.
What if strength began where control ends?
Drawing on more than thirty years of practice rooted in Southeast Asian trance traditions, Tony Yap leads a partner-based journey into vulnerability trance zones.
We begin simply, with breath, weight and the listening hand of touch. From there we let movement arise between bodies rather than from our will, as leading and following dissolve into something neither partner could make alone.
Deleuze and Guattari wrote that becoming is involutionary. In this workshop, involution meets the involuntary. We are moved rather than moving, and we discover that to yield is not to collapse. Here the masculine armour of volition softens into porosity, and something older surfaces: the animal, the god.
Every encounter is unrepeatable. No dance experience is needed, only curiosity and a willingness to be changed by another body.
Touch is always invited and never required, and witnessing is a full way to take part.
The workshop opens a doorway into Kinjiki – Forbidden Colours, Tony's performance with Taichi Ishii and trumpeter Reuben Lewis. Drawing on the colours of Mishima's novel, it holds this same passage into becoming animal and god at the edge of form. Come to the class, then watch the performance from the inside. All genders and bodies welcome.
